Aussie Moths
Glyphipterix protomacra
A sedge moth that visited our Perth Hills moth light last week.
Turns out, this is the first record of this species on #inaturalist and possibly the first picture of a living specimen.
Amazing what you can see in your backyard!

Uresiphita ornithopteralis - Tree Lucerne Moth
This is one of the more common visitors to our Perth Hills moth light over the past few weeks.
At rest they seem like a boring brown moth, but then they flash those bright yellow hindwings.

A beautiful sunny winter's morning is the perfect time to catch these amazing male Bird of Paradise flies (Callipappus sp) flitting about in search of a female.
Despite their common name, these are not actually flies but a species of scale insect.

Hypsidia niphosema
A moth that is endemic to the southwest of Western Australia, we are seeing this autumn/winter species quite frequently at the minute.

Monopis argillacea (I think)
A moth we've seen only a handful of times in our Perth Hills garden.
If my ID is correct, the caterpillars of this moth feed on feathers lining birds' nests and hair on dead animals... not the nicest of diets!

When is a dry, curled leaf not actually a dry, curled leaf? πππ¦
Researchers based mainly at the University of Western Australia show that AI can be fooled by the camouflage some moths employ.

Spotted a lovely Western Yellow Robin (Eopsaltria griseogularis) in the Perth Hills today.
It was all fluffed up, no doubt trying to keep warm on a rather chilly morning π₯Ά

There were no known photographs taken in the wild of the Myrmeleon houstoni until a regional Victorian woman snapped a photo of one while on a bushwalk.
