Peatlands are powerful. Here are just a few reasons why…
1. Peatland vegetation slows the flow of rainfall which helps reduce the risk of flooding in nearby towns and villages. Peatlands only cover around 3% of the world's surface but contains more carbon than all the world's rainforests.
Up to now, you needed ERC funding to be able to submit your work to ORE. Makes sense to fund a few editorial staff and the infra (ORE will be at @cern.bsky.social) for public dissemination of publicly funded research, rather than vainly chasing glam rags and lining the pockets of billionaires.
Who would have thought that people would be incentivised by being paid for their expert opinions?
It's normal to pay for professional services. Hopefully the big for-profit players will wake up and realise that they will have to pay too, to maintain their "premium" reputations.
📢 Big news in OA publishing. Open Research Europe will open up to researchers in 11 European countries. No APC fee to authors as long as any one author of the work is affiliated to an institution in a participating country, regardless of funding.

It's World Swift Day! ❤️
Swifts raise their chicks high in eaves or nestboxes, returning to the same site year after year.
When the young fledge, they launch into open air... & just keep going!
They’ll remain airborne for the next two or three years, until it’s time to breed themselves.
