#URIGSO researchers found that hurricanes can intensify winds over nearby ocean waters even while the storm’s center remains 60–120 miles offshore. As a hurricane approaches land, friction from the land surface slows winds onshore, creating an imbalance that can strengthen winds over the ocean.
