While in our society castration is often constructed as a feminist fantasy, in the Early Middle Ages castration was a seigneurial punishment and mostly used by men against men. Castration also sometimes remained a fantasy used to admonish rulers (which Christian Stadelmaier showed).
Today, we had an interesting workshop about "Male bodies, punishment and violence" with Christine Kleinjung, @queebees.bsky.social and Christian Stadelmaier. There were different ways to mutilate male bodies in order to dishonour them like castration or blinding.
If you're interested in animal labour, come to my paper at the IMC in Leeds on Tuesday morning. It's part of the sessions organized by @calthalas.bsky.social and Jakob Riemenschneider. In it, I adress questions related to predation, eating as a form of labour and monastic foundation stories.
