State Route 20 closes on both sides of the Cascades every winter because of heavy snowfall and the risk of avalanches. But this year, extensive repairs were necessary to fully reopen the highway because of significant damage from last December's flooding, plus a rockslide over the road in March.
Washington's iconic North Cascades Highway is slated to fully reopen by June 19.
