Vanderbilt & Wash U both have massive investments in SpaceX; they provided working capital for DOGE's attacks on science, academia, and humanity as a whole. Their admins believe the fascists will do them favors and make them rich, and that's the entire explanation for the chancellors' "report."
we could be funding archival labor—staffing, storage, systems—instead of producing this garbage
The AAUP chapters at Vanderbilt & Wash U have issued a joint statement denouncing the “State of Scholarship” report commissioned by their chancellors. Please, let’s make this as widely read as the gaslighting to which it responds.
I know Calvin’s dad is already having a moment, but every terrible “outsource precious and fleeting moments with your children to tech so that you can spend more time on your work” pitch makes me think of that one strip I never really cared about as a kid, but care a lot about as an adult.

Since most of this rests on government contracts, & he has just committed mass murder & the most egregious constitutional crimes of possibly any private citizen in American history, it should be confiscated by the state & used to reimburse American taxpayers & the federal budget.

Side note: Alex Ross of the New Yorker wrote about the Wagner Drives, and included directions (and a bit of video) here:

RIP, David Hockney. I still regularly think about the big show of his work I saw at the Met in 2018, and how color and light burst into his paintings the moment he moved to California, and how he brought that color and light back with him to Yorkshire in the 2000s.
If anyone ever wants to win my heart with a grand romantic gesture, taking me on one of these drives would almost certainly do it. Just saying.

Rebranding a hallucination as a ‘critical confabulation’ that can fill archival gaps is a big no from me.
That exhibition was also where I learned that in 1990 Hockney arranged what he called a "Wagner Drive" along the Pacific Coast Highway, with a whole operatic soundtrack timed to the views, and you can probably imagine my delight. www.thedavidhockneyfoundation.org/chronology/1...
