Though "Turtle Dreams" is now the thing people most associate with Monk thanks to its treatment on RedLetterMedia, I'm going to share this piece, "Hocket", instead, without prelude or explanation, and let y'all have a clean, uninfluenced ponder about its meaning: www.youtube.com/watch?v=enbH...
There are no pictures of plant pathologist Margaret Keay, who was born 115 years ago today, but she lives on in memory. Born in South Africa, educated in England, she spent her career in Uganda and Nigeria, researching plant diseases and starting programs to fund the education of African girls.
Kenyan biochemist Norah Olembo was born 85 years ago today. From the 1980s through to the 2000s she was an advocate of the use of science to help African farmers stay competitive globally, while also developing her country's AIDS protocols and founding FEMNET. #WomenInSTEM #ChemSky 🧪
This whole video is a wonderful example of how not just Harry, but all of Blondie, took pop star expectations about sexy coolness and stood them on their heads, getting back to the goofy joy of music. Yes, it's Heart of Glass! www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGU_...
On today's #WomenInMusic Spotlight we celebrate Meredith Monk (b. 1942), whose experiments with voice and dance push listeners into a place of thought by confronting them with the raw strangeness of human sound and movement. #MusicSky #BookSky
On today's #WomenInMusic Spotlight, we celebrate Italian composer Paola Prestini (b. 1975), whose intersectional work and devotion to bringing together artists, scientists, and musicians in works of daunting scope culminated in her 2022 opera Edward Tulane. #MusicSky #BookSky
The great Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was born 190 years ago today! She received her medical degree in 1865 by utilizing an oversight in the Society of Apothecaries' charter, after which she was a driving force behind women's medical education in Great Britain. tinyurl.com/2n5m43hd #WomenInSTEM ⚕️
On today's #WomenInMusic Spotlight, we salute Debbie Harry (b. 1945), the lead vocalist for Blondie who worked during the very heart of the music industry's worst practices for women, but constantly found ways to subvert those practices while still finding outrageous success. #MusicSky #BookSky
On today's #WomenInMusic Spotlight, we celebrate one of the most maligned women in the history of pop music, Yoko Ono (b. 1933). An avant-garde musical pioneer, she pushed the boundaries of how the female voice could be used in song while exploring the reality of women's lived experience. #MusicSky

Mathematician Charlotte Angas Scott was born 168 years ago today. Known mainly for her feat of achieving 8th Wrangler in the 1880 Tripos Exam, she should be equally remembered for her years of building foundational mathematical institutions in the United States. tinyurl.com/5aa922aa #WomenInSTEM
