By identifying effort priors, our study suggests that effort learning may provide a new framework for understanding motivational processing and has implications for motivational disorders, where maladaptive effort priors may contribute to reduced motivation to exert effort.
We show that humans learn and anticipate effort requirements by integrating effort priors and sensorimotor feedback in situations where effort information is not explicitly instructed. We further show that effort learning is shaped by different forms of environmental uncertainty.
