I was #bullied as a boy for a gayness that I didn't even understand. I was having sex with the boy across the street for a couple years and didn't realize it was a thing until I was ostracized by *all* my other friends when they found out. Word spread like wildfire and I was bullied everywhere.

So here is my challenge: I never learned normal sexual interaction with men, while sober, so I feel awkward hitting on men. I'm making headway but deal with the additional weight of getting older. I'm really starting to embrace that, though. But I feel though my whole youth was spent in hiding.

I'm more of a #Stonewall, rock-throwing pride than a get dressed up in a rainbow flag and march in a parade, kinda pride. Both are important and it matters that someone grappling with their sexuality sees that the rest of us got their back. Our youth matter.

That's when I came out. I was sexually off the chain and fearful of HIV but promiscuous. The way I dealt with this, now awkward, new sexuality was to drink alcohol, to excess. That nearly killed me when it turned into meth which is apparently what I needed to break my will to fight victimhood.

Maybe -honestly, maybe that saved my life by getting me through the early part of the AIDS epidemic. I almost died, even with good drugs.
My elder brother, Kim did die of this.

So I surrendered, went into #AA and #CMA at 56 with 10 T-cells, barely alive and built a life from scratch. I got #clean and #sober, and eventually well, and learned a new way to live. At 65 I'm truly happy and experience a certain awe toward life. It's not bliss, but a good life.

My parents never said a thing, ever, and I went into #isolation until I was almost 40, always ashamed of being me. By the time my dad died, at 77, he had come out to me, but had no one to turn to when his boyfriend died of #alcoholism. I thought 'is this me, in sexual hiding until I'm elderly?'

So, if you are #struggling, here's what I've learned: it gets better. Don't die. It's worth it to stick around, and we need you; you matter.
