I don't know what it was like on DS9 but reading These Are The Voyages you learn that the main reason TOS has such a weird mix of all-time classics and humiliating junk was...the producers had to pick which eps to bash into shape. Those became classics. The ones they couldn't get to? SPOCK'S BRAIN!
