Had a great time returning to support the UVA-Wise STEM Governor's School for #SWVA high school students & Aquatic Ecosystems professional development workshop for K-12 teachers with #VirginiaTech #SaltyCarbon collaborators! This year we assessed Camp Branch Creek in beautiful Breaks, VA. 💧🌎👩‍🔬🧪
To determine how peatlands will respond to climate change, we can explore how they responded to past events. Our new paper, led by Emily Hollingsworth, does that - elaborating on observations that global warming 56 million years ago enhanced methane cycling. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
The second paper of my #PhD is out! We show snow gum #dieback alters #VOC emissions from #tree trunks, primarily through an increase in #monoterpene emissions. Emissions from infested trunks are actually comparable in magnitude to those from leaves 🌳🪲☁️
New mid-career scientist positions in NSF Directorate for Geosciences open on Monday June 15, get ready! The application window is likely to be very short and applications will be capped, regardless of field. content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USN... 🌊

Thanks for sharing @timcurran.bsky.social . I was inspired to write about warm winters when we had some record hot June days but by the time it got published, we hit a cold snap so the article missed the moment. But it's still true - winters are warming and that brings lots of changes.
Reactive #wildfire responses leave gaps in water research. New paper presents a framework from 5 case studies (including our work after the Camp Fire!) showing how proactive co-production between scientists, water agencies & communities can build resilience 🔥💧🧪 www.frontiersin.org/journals/wat...

Rage Against the Miocene
Worth a read. Many have taken note of the growing solidarity in the science community in opposition to the OMB proposed rule. But this must be just the start. For an example, we can look to @sekahn.bsky.social, Justin Ryder & co who spoke up at ADA and were removed for it. 🧵
Wildfires generate partially combusted biomass that mobilizes to aquatic ecosystems as dissolved pyrogenic organic matter (dPyOM) in runoff, where it can impact surface water quality. However, the in...

Warmer winters mean insect pests like wasps will likely spread further, while weedy plants and rats invade alpine zones, shrinking the refuge for endangered birds.

The strong collective response of the science community to the proposed OMB rule has demonstrated the broad unity that’s possible when we all work together. We'd do well to apply this same level of activation to the larger assaults on science and democracy. My new post: blog.ucs.org/gretchen-gol...

The scientific community is fighting a proposed change to research funding. Let's keep this momentum going to take on more attacks on science.
