To determine how peatlands will respond to climate change, we can explore how they responded to past events. Our new paper, led by Emily Hollingsworth, does that - elaborating on observations that global warming 56 million years ago enhanced methane cycling.

Emissions from infested trunks are actually comparable in magnitude to those from leaves 🌳🪲☁️

Thanks for sharing @timcurran.bsky.social . I was inspired to write about warm winters when we had some record hot June days but by the time it got published, we hit a cold snap so the article missed the moment.
But it's still true - winters are warming and that brings lots of changes.

Warmer winters mean insect pests like wasps will likely spread further, while weedy plants and rats invade alpine zones, shrinking the refuge for endangered birds.
