If anyone is following this and thinks that EHRC chair Mary-Anne Stephenson hasn't met trans people - she has. A bunch of us, myself included. She knows perfectly well that you cannot tell whether or not someone is trans based on their voice. She is just a bigot who cares not a jot for our safety.
These have just been installed in my neighbourhood and it made me quite proud.
That they seem to be v positively recieved, I mean. Given so many other places seem to be embracing full arseholery lately.
W/ my colleague Martha Kenney, new piece on what we call “AI centrism” — a position that claims to split the difference btw genAI boosterism and detraction, but still leads to its acceptance and use.
E.g.:
- “We will use AI ethically/responsibly/thoughtfully”
- “We will keep a human in the loop”
I don’t know anyone outside of universities who is talking about this. But I know plenty of people chatting about sending their kids to uni. We’ll be seeing ‘mergers’ and ‘shifts to remote campuses’ and it all means closures, job losses, and nothing like the degree experience we ourselves had.
