The driver that doored Riley didn’t have car insurance, was driving on a suspended license, was parked in a no-parking zone, and opened his door in Riley’s path without looking. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/06/06/b...

A day after his death in Bridgeport, colleagues remembered Riley O’Neil as devoting his life “to making cycling better and safer,”

Bicyclist killed in Bridgeport crash was CDOT employee devoted to bike infrastructure

He was also one of the earliest supporters of our work

It’s important that we consider just how many semis drive on Halsted UIC & Pilsen are the main routes for Juarez trucking school - not everyone passes but they still drive semis through there It’s a high crash corridor All groups opposed the Amazon distro hub but Cox of DPD approved it anyway
I’ve been fixated on this since yesterday. Working at CDOT is tough & staff care deeply about micromobility. I’ve said this multiple times over the years, but I could never do their job. I’d never be able to put up w the amount of bureaucratic red tape they do. Riley being killed is so demoralizing💔
If you’re on the south side & try to bike off of Halsted it adds quite a bit of extra miles & often times you can get stuck because trains block off the streets for hours. When that happens people either pass through the train cars (which is dangerous) or you have to backtrack & go back to Halsted.
Halsted is the main route for people trying to get downtown from the Southside. There really aren’t better options. Biking on Halsted sucks. There’s very little infrastructure to protect you from drivers.

The most demoralizing part of all of this is understanding CDOT staff have to return to work Monday and deal with all the same pushback they always do as they try to make it safer to bike in Chicago. www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/t...
. @chicago.suntimes.com reports Riley went under the back wheels of the semi after being doored. Large truck & trailers w/o side guard make it more likely a bicyclist will go under the wheels in the event of a crash as there’s nothing for them to grab onto chicago.suntimes.com/transportati...

I knew Riley while we were students at DePaul and involved in the Chaddick Institute. We hadn't seen each other much in the years since we graduated but I always knew him as someone who deeply cared about this city and the people who live here, and we are worse off for letting him be taken so young

CDOT lost the best of our team yesterday. We're heartbroken. In memory of Riley O'Neil, please refer to these bike racks as "Riley Racks". He led Chicago's bike parking program for several years. Our hearts are broken, but we want to make sure his legacy lives on 💙🚲 Please spread the word
