Priscilla did wonders for wee, fragile Fergus, a premie foal who was confused and not fully formed. She gave him love, comfort, did her best to help him understand how to suckle. He got the hang of it just when mothering duties were taken over by Mouse, who builds on his good beginnings with Priss.
Dalton raced to greet his mum Priscilla. She ran for joy, straight out of the trailer, to see every friend in her herd. Her daughter Shasta - a mule whom she nursed when she was orphaned, and raised as her own - is without doubt the happiest to see her mom and does not leave her side.
Wild Boy’s eclectic band of brothers taking off for Spring Valley to meet up with the herd for summer. What a moment seeing them thunder past me to reclaim their wild lives without human intervention. #wildhorses
Dorian is at the barn keeping Flint company while he’s being treated for an abscess, but they will be out to join their friends soon.
2/ Bend Equine put out a call for a nurse mare. A kind, very selfless lady answered. She was about to wean her yearling from a #mare, Mouse, who was still in milk. She brought her to the vet yesterday. They connected immediately and wee Fergus understood the assignment. He’s latching on & nursing.
3/ By Jove, he’s got it! With Mouse sweetly nuzzling and guiding him to the right spot, wee Fergus is latching on and nursing on his own. The worlds of a mustang and thoroughbred converge for the good of both. We are so grateful!
Fergus got some sunshine & vitamin D today. He can have his grass and nibble it too. We and the vets are thrilled with his progress. We will find out soon when we can think about bringing him home with Mouse, whose lovely family has generously agreed to let her stay with him for 8 months!
Sheldon - the Cremello - is the Peter Pan of Skydog. At age 10, he’s never really grown up. He loves to play with his young friends like Smokey - the Dapple Grey. Both #wildhorses grew up at Skydog after being rescued.
1/ When Priscilla started to nip at Fergus - and then staff - she was telling us she’d had enough. I totally respect her. She gave her best effort, but lost patience with him constantly banging her udder as he tried to latch. It was painful as the udders are sore when producing milk. So…Plan B!
