The Far Right riot in Belfast last night was nothing less than “a race-based pogrom”, Belfast MP and leader of the SDLP Claire Hanna said. The mob hunted down non-whites and set fire to their homes. Carl Whyte, a local councillor, called it “a hard Far Right element”.
At moments of crisis, leaders have a responsibility to speak to, and for, their country. The PM should be on the airwaves, telling the stories of the children, teenagers and families who have been burned out of their homes; naming those responsible; and leading a national fightback against them.
I have to say, listening to the Today programme dedicate an entire (context free) section about whether migrants are more likely to be convicted criminals *the morning after* hundreds of non-migrants of my own ethnicity committed a pogrom is blood boiling.
Opportunity cost is what else the money could have been spent on instead. Vaccines, scientific and humanities research, education, natural disasters, infrastructure, shore up Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid.
The richest person in human history is pouring his time, energy, and resources into inciting racist violence in Belfast and beyond. The United States Congress should terminate all US subsidies to, and contracts with, the firms that funnel money to his sickening skinhead project.
In his first interview since being kicked out of the US, FIFA referee Omar Artan tells’s the NYT’s Matt Bigg that the biggest dream of his professional life has been shattered. The World Cup ref was questioned for 11 hours, held in a cell and then dumped on a plane. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/09/w...
Politicians who fanned these flames should hang their heads in shame. Time and again we've seen this story play out. Single incidents used to fuel a far right narrative - and communities across the nation paying the price.
Condemning riots isn't enough. We need policy action, including an immediate appraisal of X as a vehicle for coordinating far-right disorder. And we need political leadership, to challenge white nationalism as an idea, not to validate it daily and then complain when it turns violent.
