I share about walking, biking, great cities, & progressive politics.
I work for @streetsalliance.bsky.social (Seattle's walking, biking, and streets for people nonprofit), but these are my personal opinions.

Guys, I bought a truck.
(that's actually a bike)
Seattle is about to get screwed. King County Council is proposing to increase our sales tax and send it to wealthy suburbs that don’t want to pay for their own road building. It will soak Seattle for $3 million a year, in perpetuity, to maintain roads in Medina and Bellevue. Ask for a fair deal 👇🏻

Seattle taxpayers should not be subsidizing roads in wealthy suburbs like Yarrow Point and Medina!
Since that 2022 session, Tirana’s cycling network has grown to 72 kilometres of protected lanes. With a renewed emphasis on quality and not just quantity, these corridors feel welcoming to everyone—not only confident adults, but children, the elderly, and those who’ve never considered biking before.
It is very disappointing that neither the Stranger nor the Seattle Times has covered this story so far.

“Regionalism” is when Seattle sales tax $ is taken to subsidize suburbs that don’t want to raise their own property taxes to pay for their own roads, dontcha know?

Should Seattle sales tax be increased to subsidize wealthy suburban road building? No! But that's what the King County Council is proposing to do this Friday. Tell them to treat Seattle fairly, and not siphon $3 million sales tax for Bellevue etc.

A 0.1% countywide sales tax hike is on deck for later this week, largely to fund road improvements outside cities and towns. Seattle city leaders are arguing that a proposed cap diverting several million dollars per year to other cities and towns is unfair.

A new tax measure intended to bolster unincorporated King County could also boost city budgets...but significantly shortchange Seattle with an arbitrary cap.

A fight is brewing at the King County Council tomorrow over whether a new 0.1% sales tax measure will arbitrarily limit the amount of funding that gets sent to Seattle, diverting it elsewhere. This week city leaders started pushing back.
