Stoked to launch my new module "Translational Ecology" with Prof Hepburn & guest speakers from NOAA, UC, CEFAS, EA, MMO! Yesterday we discussed conflict resolution with Yael Teff-Seker. The course focuses on how to translate env science into action, e.g. using effective stakeholder engagement. 🌳🎣🔥🪸🌎
By Ernest Scheyder Jan 22 (Reuters) – The Metals Co TMC.O on Thursday became the first deep-sea miner to seek Washington’s approval to mine the international seabed under a streamlined permitting…
In the California Central Valley we are usually worrying about #drought. This study confirms that the smallest juvenile Chinook salmon experience exceptionally poor survival through the Sacramento-San...
Early migrants rely on downstream habitats to grow & become 'sea-ready' but for our focus population they are restricted to a highly channelized Delta. Wetlands and floodplains have been lost. Unsurprisingly, all fish - but particularly the early migrants - had a very hard time during droughts. 2/3
Who else is going to #FSBI2026 in Southampton this July? I'm excited to see how we can reduce our env footprint for the Green Travel Awards! Tell us your ideas & tag #FSBIGreenTravel. Even just buying C offsets helps if you need to fly! I am doing walk-train-bus this year. You?

A beautiful and fascinating lecture by Dr Rachel Johnson from @fisheries.noaa.gov about bringing #salmon back to their ancestral waters above Shasta Dam using indigenous knowledge and the principles of two-eyed seeing. Really loving the #TranslationalEcology module at @universityofessex.bsky.social
Surprisingly, while 'wetter is (usually) better', early migrants also did badly during extreme flow year 2017, getting swept out to sea & into the pumps. Those flows were crazy (#whiplashweather) but there will be more in the future. Complex habitat are so important to buffer climate change impacts!
New #OA article in @globalchangebio.bsky.social! Juvenile Chinook salmon split into distinct migratory 'groups'. We used #otolith and eye lens #isotopes to identify the origin and migration routes of salmon, and the frequency of each 'group' at sequential sampling points thru the life cycle. 1/3
