I think, Europe needs to confront the challenge by the Trumpists ("civilisational erasure") directly. What does it mean to be civilized?
It is the respect of limits on one's power, rule of law, restraint from acting without due process, acceptance of inherent rights of others and own fallibility.
Why is Ukraine able to withstand war & bombing like it is?
Because of the Maidan - refounding the will of the people to their own democratic self determination.
Why can we in Europe not bring ourselves to support UA like we should, in our own interest?
Because we did not have this for too long.
The problem with the European response so far, is that we are not saying this. In not standing by our own civilisation, we risk eventually giving it up, for the sake of avoiding conflict.
Carney was the first who said clearly "We stand by ourselves". Europe does not (yet) and that is our failure.

Europe needs to say clearly, without anger - Indeed. Civilisation hangs in the balance. You are giving it up.
This casts into doubt our own adherence to our own professed values. How is our reaction (Rutte's daddy talk) different from the servile compliance of US corporations? How does this not imply that for us, money counts more than values, as is the case with those corporations?
