A $30 toy and a $300 one can look identical in a photo. One is a sponge. One isn't. The difference isn't branding — it's chemistry. And for anything that goes inside your body, that's worth understanding.
Honest takeaway: TPE isn't "bad." For external use, on a budget, cleaned carefully and replaced often, it's fair. But for internal, long-term use, non-porous fully-sanitizable silicone wins. True no matter whose product you buy.
The research: a small 2014 study (Indiana University) tested HPV on a TPE and a silicone vibrator. After cleaning, the porous TPE held HPV DNA more stubbornly; a day later silicone tested clear, TPE didn't. Small proof-of-concept — but it matches the material science.
Platinum-cured silicone is the other end: 100% non-porous. Nothing soaks in. It's hypoallergenic, chemically inert, and fully sanitizable — you can boil it. It lasts years, not months.
Why so much more expensive? The raw silicone costs several times more than TPE, it's set with a platinum catalyst, and it's a thermoset — one air bubble and the whole piece is scrap, no remelting. The maker eats every flaw. The price is mostly material and waste, not markup.
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is the budget standard — a cheap, soft plastic-and-rubber blend. The catch is invisible: it's microscopically porous, like a sponge. Even after a thorough wash, the pores can hold moisture and residue. "Clean" becomes "cleaner."
