Enduring social science claims necessarily operate at high level of abstraction. Implications: on the one hand, we need to be clear about specificity of any empirical result, on the other hand, contributions to cumulative understanding have to be mapped to theoretical abstractions.

Presented new, in progress work, joint with Aaron Kaufman, exploring the idea of “generalization as a model selection problem”. Paper coming soon - Aaron will present at Asia PolMeth and I’ll present at EPSS in coming weeks.

Besides the great papers, a highlight of the day was end of workshop roundtable where @astrezh.bsky.social sent my head spinning by noting that what distinguishes social science is that our immediate objects of study are ephemeral social constructions (🤯).
I am so very sorry to hear this about a beloved colleague, Raul. I had the opportunity to work with him over the past 15 years through the @egap.bsky.social network, where always brought a critical mindset and reminded us about the human side of our task as social scientists.
