To be absolutely clear in the current environment, the bias identified here was a bias for white lead investigators and also for topics that are favored by white investigators, regardless of the lead investigator’s race.

Over the last few days, there has been a lot of discussion about the proposed regulation to increase political oversight of grantmaking. Some have argued this represents increased politicization of science. As someone who studies the politics of science, I think that's the wrong argument to make. 🧵

And so, funding decisions are usually made through peer review, overseen by program officers with subject matter expertise. Science agencies have political oversight, but technical experts are in charge of funding, seemingly separating the two.
But of course, scientists are human actors, living in societies. Research funding reflects their biases. This has shown up in geographic, racial, and gender disparities, and in the past, the federal government has taken steps to fix this. In other words, science/politics are intertwined in practice.
