Using original survey data from Germany, we find:
📌 Dialect speakers feel significantly less represented politically
📌 They have a stronger preference for politicians who speak their regional dialect
& this holds even after controlling for ideology, party preference, and government satisfaction.
We argue dialects are a subtle but meaningful form of descriptive representation: shared language may signal local attachment, group belonging, and recognition.
Largely overlooked in the literature but hopefully not for much longer 🙂
