RIP Mark Rothko. You would have loved how the hydrogen peroxide bleach is only turning the Reflecting Pool blue around the perimeter

derek guy
we are doing a summer reading challenge (number of pages read per week) and this past week I beat my 12 year old by ONE PAGE and I don’t think he’ll ever forgive me
I really only needed a week off from teaching to refresh my intellectual energy enough to be excited about planning a new course
Finally started Widow’s Bay the other night and I am already immediately in and happy to be late to the party
This was one of those pieces where I thought “what can I possibly say that’s fresh about a 50-year-old stone-cold classic” and then my love of quantum physics came in to save me
One of my favorite things on TV, as a lifelong high school teacher, is actors who can execute a pitch-perfect asshole teenager character, and Kingston Rumi Southwick is doing that SO WELL on Widow’s Bay. (Don’t spoil it for me, I’m only like 4 episodes in!)
banning teenagers from things historically always works perfectly when it comes to solving the serious underlying problem you are trying to fix
Reposting this in case you missed it yesterday! 4000 words about quantum superposition and the ambiguity of horror and John Carpenter’s broken systems.

Many thanks to @aheartofgould.bsky.social for the thoughtful edits and @chadperman.bsky.social for letting me write about whatever I want always!!
If you're looking for distraction on this Monday afternoon/evening, I wrote for @brightwalldarkroom.com's 1976 issue about ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and Schrödinger's Cat.
