New marine protected area alert! 🌊 After years of tireless dedication, our Dutch Partner @vogelbeschermingnl.bsky.social has secured a new marine protected area: the Hollandse Kust. This year, it will be designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the EU Birds Directive.
Europe is helping migratory bird populations recover, while ensuring sustainable hunting practices. These species connect wetlands, coastlines, forests, and communities across the globe. Yet, many populations remain in decline.
While some species have been hunted traditionally for century, habitat loss, wetland degradation, pollution, climate change, and changing agricultural practices are the main drivers of their decline.
The Hollandse Kust is an important resting and feeding ground for many coastal birds and seabirds, including the Great Cormorant, the Red-throated Loon, the Common Scoter and many more.
Thanks to the EU Birds Directive, many species were given the chance to recover. But some of them, like the Common Pochard (Aythya ferina), need more help. Temporary hunting restriction, together with more conservation efforts, could really help their recovery.
🎉 Our Partner in Croatia, Biom Association, turned 20! 🐦 Since 2006, Biom has grown into one of the leading nature conservation voices in the country. Today, we celebrate some of their greatest achievements. Read more here: www.birdlife.org/news/2026/06... Pictures by Biom
Help us protect our ocean! Where Europe's ocean laws are enforced, fish recover and coastal communities thrive. The science is clear. The laws work. Keep them. 👉 handsoffnature.eu #HandsOffNature @vonderleyen.ec.europa.eu
When countries act together, Europe's migratory birds can recover. Let’s keep working together to protect nature! Here to know more about how EU is supporting the recovery of game birds: www.birdlife.org/news/2026/06...
As a new SPA, the area joins the Natura 2000 network under a strict nature protection regime. A landmark win for the birds of the North Sea coast. Read the full article here: www.birdlife.org/news/2026/06... 📷Shutterstock
