🧠 The results show that, under ambiguity, the brain first relies on prior knowledge to “guess” what it is seeing. It then refines perception by matching sensory input with internal expectations.
👀 In everyday life, vision is rarely perfect. Objects are often partially hidden, poorly lit, or seen as shadows. Yet the brain is usually able to quickly extract meaning from ambiguous visual input.
⚡ After briefly seeing the original image, participants could suddenly recognize the hidden object. What once looked like abstract noise could instantly become a face, an animal, or a familiar object.
📊 Interestingly, the study also found that more information does not always improve perception in a linear way. Improvement is strongest when new information either strongly confirms prior expectations—or clearly contradicts them. More info: doi.org/10.1038/s442...
