His manual Practical hints on decorative printing (1815-23) showed his latest experimental techniques and materials. He had realized that detailed pictorial images could be built up from colour on separate wood blocks.

In the early 19th century, it became important to find relatively cheap ways of printing in colour. Books on natural history, travel and archaeology all benefited from colour illustrations. William Savage (1770-1843) was one of the pioneers.
