Gilgamesh is an interesting, recurring character from FFV. He was banished into the Interdimensional Rift by Exdeath. As he travels the Void, he has access to different Final Fantasy worlds.
In FFVIII, the Japanese version is more clear, that he was asking about Bartz, his friendly rival from FFV.
