Reply mini thread to a post about a data center being used to heat a whole town (instead of wasting all the heat it produces evaporating water, which is then also wasted).

This is absolutely the way. If we require datacenters to beneficially use their waste heat and we require that they be powered by renewables then they turn into decarbonized heating machines with a side effect of computing. I do wonder what happens to this data center's heat in summer though.
