With a hat trick against Algeria tonight, Inter Miami CF’s Lionel Messi tied the all-time FIFA World Cup scoring record and became the first active MLS player to score three goals in a World Cup match.
By starting today’s match, former Chicago Fire FC midfielder Brian Gutiérrez becomes the first MLS Homegrown player to start the opening match of a World Cup game for Mexico since Carlos Salcedo in 2018.
Both Inter Miami CF's Luis Suárez and Philadelphia Union's Milan Iloski scored a hat trick in Miami's 6-4 victory tonight, marking the second time in MLS history there have been two hat tricks achieved in the same match.
With his first-half goal for Croatia against England, FC Dallas’ Petar Musa became the third active MLS player to score for a European nation in a FIFA World Cup, joining Gareth Bale and Xherdan Shaqiri.
The strike also marked the 32nd goal Musa has scored in the city of Dallas.
