Despite the absence of a written constitution, New Zealand has developed strong legislative, policy, and regulatory frameworks to safeguard water rights.
For Human Rights Day, HR2W Legal Expert, Kay Windle, shared her insight on New Zealand’s distinctive legal approach to the human rights to water and sanitation.
Initiatives such as the Local Water Done Well policy package set national service standards, strengthen local providers, introduce accountability mechanisms, and apply economic regulation to improve both accessibility and affordability.
