World War I lasted 1,568 days — from July 28, 1914, to Nov. 11, 1918.
Today marks the 1,568th day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24, 2022.
The war itself began even earlier with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and occupation of parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions in 2014.
An opportune time for governments to back a rapid move to local, sustainable energy, although their capture by oligarchies heavily invested in fossil fuels will continue delay and the people will pay the price.

Men "cannot imagine living in a world without struggle. And if the greater part of the world in which they live is characterized by peaceful and prosperous liberal democracy, then they will struggle against that peace and prosperity, and against democracy."
"Vladimir Putin is losing — not in one or two dimensions of the conflict, but in every dimension by which one might honestly measure strategic progress... His only viable claim to advantage at present is the disposition of the American president."

My new assessment, "Losing on Every Dimension." My thesis: Putin is losing not in one or two dimensions but in every one that honestly measures strategic progress: military, cognitive, moral, industrial, economic. Read it here: mickryan.substack.com/p/losing-on-...

An Assessment of Russia's Strategic Position in 2026, (Part 1)
My long write-up of our meeting yesterday in London with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He describes Russia as "isolated and alone", says Putin "lies" and is upbeat about Ukraine's situation on the battlefield - the best for 2 and a half yrs. With @pippacrerar.bsky.social

Hi All, Just did a Subtack Live with Vlad Urubkov from Come Back Alive. Vlad gave a detailed and fascinating description of the Ukrainian mid-range strike campaign against Russian military logistics. It was better explained than I have seen anywhere else. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...
Important read! Boredom and lack of historical knowledge is killing us.

“we should not be looking for a change of heart in the Kremlin, but for signs of a systemic failure [..]
Until then, hopes for a “negotiated settlement” serve only to prolong the bloodshed. Russia will not take an off-ramp; it needs to be defeated.”
“There are now more active conflicts than at any point since World War Two. Overall peacefulness deteriorated in 99 countries, marking the 12th consecutive year of global decline.”
“The biggest unreported story in the world right now is the way in which the Strait of Hormuz is on the verge of crippling Asian, African, European economies, not just through oil, but through oil products—jet fuel, diesel, NAFTA, fertiliser. 1/2

In a wide-ranging interview, an upbeat Ukrainian president also discusses Donald Trump, King Charles, and how Kyiv is prepared to share its experience of drone warfare with the west
On one hand, we have President Volodymyr Zelensky’s open letter to Vladimir Putin, a document that invites the Russian president to a face-to-face meeting to

There are now more active conflicts than at any point since World War Two. Residents in Iceland, New Zealand and elsewhere explain the qualities that make their nations so peaceful.
