I am not the only person by far to observe this, but I do think there’s some real truth to this.
When I was a kid online, I think there was some safety in my being able to hang out in more decentralized and explicitly kid and teen focused spaces (which nobody was really making big money off of).
I try and keep my nose clean and not trash talk other folks in comics, it is unprofessional.
But I am also a proud trans woman. And John Byrne has a long, repeated history of disgusting transphobic statements on the very personal forum where he posted these comics that are now being collected.

Zoe is scratching the tiniest bit of the surface of the gross shit Byrne has said on his forums (I always associate that cesspit with the racist/sexist/anti-SW shit he said about Jessica Alba), but every Byrne comic is a countdown until he features an underage girl ‘romancing’ a much older man.
If you’re surprised to find that John Byrne would use such sympathetic language about pedophiles and such dehumanizing language about trans women, I would caution you to avoid reading literally every long-running John Byrne comic.
Often it’s an adult woman’s mind trapped in the body of a prepubescent girl though, so that makes it “okay.”
If your business model doesn’t work without breaking the law, then you’re not in business.
