I can’t believe it’s already been a week since the #PlyMSEF Student Conference. I was part of the organising committee, which included the chance to chair the speed talk session. I also got another opportunity to present my poster on the effects of microplastics on hermit crab risk coping behaviour.
Zoo visitors in organisations across the world can contribute to this. Keep an eye out for if your local zoo is participating...
I was annoyed that I couldn't find a database of David Attenborough documentaries where I could search for a specific episode by topic.
So I made it.

Yesterday I had a fantastic time talking all things hermit crabs and animal personality for @soapboxscience.bsky.social. This initiative aims to give women and non-binary scientists a platform to tell the general public all about their research. Thanks to everyone who came along and asked questions!
Celebrating #nationalzooloversday by hanging out with the Barbary macaques @monkeyforest.bsky.social in the sunshine.
Celebrating Plymouth #PirateWeekend 🏴☠️⚓️🌊. I’m particularly proud of the fact I didn’t have to buy a single new item for my costume; it was assembled entirely from things I already own.
On Monday I had a great evening at the National Marine Aquarium listening to @bd-stew.bsky.social and @molkjam.bsky.social talking about the recent bloom in octopus in the Southwest for the spring #PlyMSEF lecture. I think all lectures should be held in front of aquarium tanks in future!
As someone who found the process of attending my first conference a little bit mystifying, I thought I’d create a guide to walk you through the whole thing and share some of the tips and tricks I’ve picked up. Who knew finding a decent poster tube could be so difficult?
