After witnessing the growing danger facing families in Prague, he helped arrange transport, documents, and foster homes in Britain, placing children on trains that carried them to safety before the borders closed under Nazi control. Many of their parents never survived the Holocaust, meaning his actions preserved not only hundreds of lives, but entire future generations.What makes Winton’s story especially extraordinary is that he remained largely silent about it for decades. The world only learned the full scale of what he had done after documents containing the names of the rescued children were discovered in his home years later. In a later television appearance, he was unknowingly surrounded by many of the grown adults he had saved as children, who stood one after another to honor him.
