on a lighter note about private servers, i do think there's a mild "value" in keeping some around as sort of unofficial scientific testing grounds to see what players like. let them run for a little bit, see how a feature plays out. wouldn't be surprised if that's already what happens (classic)

i'm always skeptical of private server owners and so forth, but i have to say... blizz going for ascension is particularly funny to me just because of how much they monetized literally every aspect of the client, i couldn't imagine anyone actually enjoying this. imagine paying everything in crypto
