New London Economics research, commissioned by the DfE, highlights significant differences in the financial sustainability of childcare providers across the sector. The research found that 1 in 4 nursery class settings and 1 in 3 childminders brought in less than 80p of income for every £1 of costs

In contrast, 4 in 10 private group-based providers brought in more than £1.20 for every £1 of costs. The report also found that the average cost of delivering one hour of childcare increased by 8% between 2024 and 2025, with the largest increase among childminders (14%).
