i remember back on tumblr when i was in high school (like 2009-2011) when christmas would come around seeing all the "Christmas Haul" posts from mutuals and folks i was following and realizing that I was living a whole separate reality from most of my friends. baby's first "wait are we poor?" moment
i legit grew up thinking my parents just didn't ever wanna get us shit (partly cuz they would buy themselves nice new things, but never us) and then I remember one day just doing the math and taking inventory of my life up until that point and realizing "oh bitch it's poverty?"
