I forgot about this too. but it's a day that made the relationship between my partner and I possible as well.
A thing that is taking so much restraint in my fantasy mystery short story is avoiding going into huge exposition dumps about how magic works in my world.
instead I'm trying to drip feed the mechanics of it through actions, observation and dialog within the story. It's slow but it'll be better.
I'll also note this was just kind of a policy with my elementary school. Sugarcoating wasn't exactly part of the curriculum.
Don't get me started on what they showed us during the lessons on the Holocaust in 4th grade.
It's not just you. The book Dog Whistle Politics actually talks about this! As some other folks have noted a similar thing happened with how the Irish were brought into whiteness.
There is an old iconic photo of a Black man who's back is an absolute mess of whipping scars. It's brutal and the kind of thing that'd be censored for graphic content on this site I think.
I was five when that photo was shown. Not everyone gets sanitized versions of slavery's horrors.
560 words written today. It's not a lot (my goal is always 1k-2k). But it's more words than 0 and right now as I get back into the swing of things that's all that matters.
And one reason for that is some of us have those horrors written into our very skin.
Hundreds of years of horrors that the people committing dragged out because it was profitable for them to commit to the sadism.
As someone who thinks a lot about parenthood to varying levels of seriousness and is also a workaholic who loves his art I think about the ideas in this comic a lot.
Bits like this. The full nature of using magic in #Ha-Nahn isn't elucidated much at all here but there are a few key elements. It can be modified on the fly, it requires stories and it requires concentration.
