A novel coral functional classification applied to the longest monitoring series of Southwestern Atlantic reefs (2006-2023) reveals declines in the cover of functionally unique coral species followed by increases in the cover of fast-reproducing, weedy corals. #Abrolhos #Coralreefs #UFRJ #FUBerlin
Severe and widespread coral reef damage during the 2014-2017 Global Coral Bleaching Event - Nature Communications
Global vertebrate populations decline faster in the presence of multiple threats compared to single threats.
Ever wanted to see how a coral skeleton grows? In this paper (led by: @jtrendbio.bsky.social) www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... we use Live CT, a method of scanning live organisms using microCT, to visualise how the skeleton grew over about one month.
Great work led by @chrisecornwall.bsky.social

This year we are involved in 3 fully funded PhD projects via IGNITE our NERC DLA. The deadline is Thursday Jan 8th 2026 . 1. Is the world already 1.5 C warmer?...
From 2014–2017, marine heatwaves caused global mass coral bleaching, where the corals lose their symbiotic algae. The authors find, this event exceeded the severity of all prior global bleaching events in recorded history, with approximately half the world’s reefs bleaching and 15% experiencing substantial mortality.

A belt of seaweed has formed across the tropical Atlantic nearly every year since 2011, despite reduction in its extent elsewhere. The causes of this growth are now coming into clearer focus.
New paper out yesterday by us and a large group of collaborators in Nature Reviews Earth and Environment. We discuss the persistence of coral reef structures under climate change. We highlight several possible futures for coral reef carbonate production: www.nature.com/articles/s43...

Carbonate production and accretion is negatively affected by ocean warming and acidification, threatening coral reef persistence. This Review synthesizes understanding of environmental impacts on reef...
