This month we welcome 3 new researchers to the #ERC_SIESTA project @mioceanologie.bsky.social @cnrs.fr 🔬
❄️ @lassezj.bsky.social, postdoc, Arctic microbial ecology
🧬 Claire Jenkins, masters student, astrobiology & extreme environments
⚡Ezra Finney, masters student, microbial ecology & bioenergetics
Svalbard is thawing in April, and it’s not supposed to. 2026 ground temperatures at 0.2m depth in Svalbard spiking to 0°C in April, far exceeding the 1998-2025 median and maximum
Bravo Sibylle Lebert who did a fantastic job presenting her #ERC_SIESTA research on bacterial ice nucleation in glacier environments at the 33e congrès de l’École doctorale Sciences de l’environnement (ED251) at @mioceanologie.bsky.social @univ-amu.fr @erc.europa.eu ❄️🧬🦠🔬🇪🇺
Hugely proud of @microbemac.bsky.social on the publication of her first first-author paper from her PhD! 🔬❄️🎓🏆
Also a first for me: my first PhD student's first first-author PhD paper 😁📃🔬🏆
Some snaps from 79° north 🐻❄️
What happens to Arctic soils when they thaw? ❄️🦠🔬
We thawed frozen Svalbard soils & identified which microbes grew following thaw. Our results highlight how dormancy, predation & seasonality shape carbon cycling in thawing Arctic soils

Many ocean microbes have the genetic potential of consuming taurine, a key organosulfur compound, but it is unclear how this activity is linked to the worldwide decline in oxygen levels. Here, we found by 13C-DOS qSIP that taurine was only used as a C source in hypoxic waters of the Mariager Fjord.
