CDS 2026 was full of excellent science and good times! A big thanks to all the speakers in the intuitive theories of care preconference, organized by @rtompkins.bsky.social -- so many new ideas and findings to think about!
Fantastic surprise tenure cake, made by Bill Pepe for the year end SoCal lab hang. Really fun to celebrate with (some of) the folks who made this career milestone possible - couldn’t ask for a better team ❤️
There was also a chance to celebrate some good news with friends: UCSD decided to give me tenure and let me stick around! Photo credit: @carenwalker.bsky.social, Champagne credit: @adenaschachner.bsky.social

My current lab manager is heading to grad school this fall, so I'm hiring a new one (shared with Zoe Liberman)! There's one week left to apply. We hope that this experience will help prepare someone for graduate studies and/or careers in research.

New preprint w @carenwalker.bsky.social & @drbarner.bsky.social! We test the "minimal representations" hypothesis that explains gaps in 3yos modal reasoning. Against it, we find that even 2½yos reason about mutually exclusive possibilities... when goals are clear to them. osf.io/preprints/ps... 1/6
Very excited to share this paper, led by @ajhaskins.bsky.social ! We find that how people look around the world is stable and idiosyncratic — and that these gaze patterns are shaped in part by the conceptual priorities each person brings to a scene. 1/3 www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

This is happening tomorrow! Lorenzo, Ori, Natalie, and I will be there, talking about the conferences but also just the broader benefit to developmental science of integrating knowledge and use of behavioral and neuroimaging methods. Join us! Free registration at tinyurl.com/fitingicis
Many, many thanks to the people who helped me get here, most especially past & present members of the SoCal Lab. Thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to continue doing science with them and the rest of my lovely, brilliant colleagues here!

Our paper finding that infants infer helpers’ relationships, and not their dispositions, is now out in PNAS! Sharing in case anyone needs something to read on the way home from #CDS2026 ;) doi.org/10.1073/pnas...

Yay for publishing null results! We didn't find an effect of *character* gender on kids' expectations or evaluations of empathy, but we did find one effect of participant gender: girls valued empathy more than boys in character evaluations. Maybe a clue about about the origins of later stereotypes?
