The RW alt. media measure in this paper captures outlets that vary in their level of extremity. But, maybe interesting for context: as recently discussed here, 2 of 7 RW alt. media sources are also mentioned in the Austrian Verfassungsschutzbericht 2025. See (in German): bsky.app/profile/kapp... 4/5
What is more? Previous research suggests that neg. emotions may lead citizens towards using alt media (e.g., anxiety about migration, anger about COVID response). But, for the general measures of emot. (i.e., not topic-specific), there is no evidence in this study's timeframe (Jan. to Oct. 24) 3/5
For anxiety, it looks different: RW alt. media did not predict anxiety. Anxiety had only between W1-W2 a neg. effect on trust. Why? Based on the available data: tbh, not sure 🤷. But other work suggests that the relationship anxiety-trust is context-dependent (perceiving trustees as (un)capable) 2/5
New blog post! In which I explain the issue with mediation analysis and sketch out one way to deal with the underlying causal inference problem -- in just a bit over 1,000 words! If you have never found the time to read up on this, now is your chance. www.the100.ci/2025/03/20/r...
Finally, the data stems from the Austrian National Election Survey project, which conducted an online panel survey with 23 waves, three of which assessed alt. media use. Big thanks to those making the data available via @aussda.bsky.social. See also for details/link: bsky.app/profile/schn... 5/5
Read-only for raw data is great advice. Also, an intuitive structure for subdirectories is important. But raw data as *.pdf seems a bit... impractical? Are reviewers and (future) readers then supposed to parse your data from a PDF? This sounds a bit error-prone to me (or I don't get it)
New paper in IJPP📗 How does right-wing alternative media use affect political anxiety and anger as well as trust in political institutions? Drawing from 3 survey waves, RW alt. media use was positively related to anger. In turn, anger negatively affected pol. trust. OA: doi.org/10.1177/1940... 1/5

📢 New in HCR by @janadreston.bsky.social and @andreasnanz.bsky.social: Both intentional search and accidental exposure to election info on social media boost political knowledge—but don’t improve vote-choice alignment. Intentional seekers just feel more confident. Read: doi.org/10.1093/hcr/...
📢 Publication 📢 Matthes, @andreasnanz.bsky.social, Stubenvoll, and @rutakaskeleviciute.bsky.social found positive associations between social media, political expression, and participation at the between, but not within-person, level. 👉https://doi.org/10.1177/00936502261430387

Mediation analysis has gotten a lot of flak, including classic titles such as “Yes, but what’s the mechanism? (Don’t expect an easy answer)” (Bullock et al., 2010), “What mediation analysis can (not) ...

Reviewer notes: That’s a very nice mediation analysis you have there. It would be a shame if something happened to it.
