It's also worth pointing out that researchers developed vaccines for the worst diseases first. People who only know current common illnesses no longer have reference for just how bad smallpox, polio, and so on were.

The major point is that the anti-vaccine misinformation machine is worth millions. Vaccines worked so well that Polio & small pox are dim & distant memories, therefore less compelling. I did not see what it was like to live with those outbreaks or watch people suffer from complications.
