There can be few gowns that are quite so intensely drenched in colour or so upholstered in style and for that reason I love its boldness and visibility. This is not a woman fading into the background but demanding attention. Early #1870s #VandA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
Colours have been layered to create this late 1950s evening dress, different shades of tulle building a smoky underskirt, topped with black velvet. This layer is itself layered with large floral spangles. Designed by Pat Rodgers @ngvmelbourne.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
Such was the value of cloth in the c18th that clothes were frequently repurposed, alterations creating a newly fashionable garment. The striped fabric of this caraco jacket dates to c1760 but the cut is all #1780s. Treasured textiles given new life #LACMA #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
I can remember seeing this mid #1920s bottle green velvet opera coat in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence some years ago now. The collar was a marvel and I stood & looked at its sumptuousness for a while. Here it is, sleek & shining, designed by Reville & Rossiter #uffizigalleries #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
More informal 17th century clothing. This embroidered loose woman’s jacket, 1590-1630, perhaps worn during pregnancy or nursing, also shows signs of alteration. Full description & more images here: collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O80226/...
#Ootd is this 1925 dress. The beige silk and black beaded top and the black and pink sequined bottom come crashing together at the low waist through sharp triangles. It is very artistic and truly exemplifies the 1920s Art Dec's focus on geometric shapes #Fashionhistory
