While preparing for death, it is said Nero muttered the words 'qualis artifex pereo' (What an artist the world is losing). In his final words he addressed a witness who tried to stop his bleeding by saying: 'Too late! This is fidelity!'
There are multiple stories as to what happened. Some include the emperor attempting to swim across the river, others claim he was bathing or was thrown from his horse.

1958 years ago, on the 9th of June 68 CE, Nero instructed Epaphroditus to kill him after learning the Senate had declared him a public enemy, ending the Julio-Claudian dynasty and starting the civil war known as the Year of the Four Emperors. Nero was 30 years old when he died. #otd #history 🗃️

It is debated whether Nero took his own life or was, in fact, killed by someone loyal to him. I recommend this read: allthatsinteresting.com/emperor-nero... by @marcomc2.bsky.social and Cara Johnson
836 years ago, on the 10th of June 1190, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa drowned in the Selaph river (now Göksu) in Turkey during the Third Crusade. His flesh was interred in Antioch, his bones in Tyre and his heart and inner organs in Tarsus. #otd #history 🗃️
