Less obvious one: writing a book, in my experience, often requires you to just dip out of the world for long periods. Like, if you're trying to write something complex or develop a complex plot structure, you have to have total focus. Kelly and I started calling this "burning down the house."

The idea of the metaphor is that normally you have many things in life - personal life, keeping up with email, other projects, hobbies, and you just have to let them go down in flames as you grind to get the damned thing finished. If you're stressed about that, you stuff it down.
