Also took in Stamford Bridge, location of the lesser known battle in 1066, the community have produced their own equivalent of the Bayeux tapestry. The Norwegian Harold was as defeated by the Saxon Harold…who of course a few weeks later was deposed by William at Hastings.
Finally, my second visit this year to York Minster, full of beautiful monuments in the main body of the church, amazing views from the tower and a superb museum in the crypt.

Flamborough Head plus Bridlington Priory
Also enjoyed York’s Mansion House, used by the city’s Lord Mayors
A day in York - first, a couple of churches, All Saints, Pavement, the city’s civic church and St Martin, bombed in WW2 and restored partially in the late 1960s, with a modern organ gifted by Germany.
After visiting Flamborough Head (seal watching) stopped at a Doctor Who themed garage on the edge of York, which I know @alexwilcock.bsky.social would love!
North Yorkshire Moors Railway and Whitby Abbey.
Another fab Yorkshire country house visit, to Burton Agnes Hall, built by the Welsh origin Griffith family in 1601. Has a superb and eclectic art collection.
Castle Howard, one of my best ever days out. Wanted to go here since I was a teen viewer of Brideshead Revisted. Magnificent house and parkland.
York’s art gallery has some good pictures and a fine ceramics collection and is currently hosting an exhibition of Japanese art
