(In reality they could have waitlisted her for any number of reasons, including racial, gender and geographical balance as well as academic performance and test scores. The IEP theory was just how I rationalized it at the time.)
Now that I'm thinking about this, I suspected at the time that the IEP kept her out of the city's best magnet middle school. There's a lottery system now, but back then principals had a lot of leeway in who they admitted, and why would they pick a kid whose parents might make them do extra stuff?
This is the only thing I know about him.
And I guess we had legal recourse to make the school district do something more for her, but the IEP wasn't our idea, and it wasn't clear there would have been any real benefit, except maybe to lawyers.
My kid received a gifted IEP designation in second or third grade and we were like, "Okay, what does that mean in an urban public school in a school district with no money?" And the answer was "basically nothing."
