Ouch. Flood protection infrustructure is typically designed for a 1-in-50-year or 1-in-100-year flood. New study finds, “At nearly half of the 130 sites analyzed in the study, a flood expected once every 100 years in 1900 now occurs at least once per decade.” news.tulane.edu/pr/sea-level...
🇦🇶 Antarctica is a long way away but at the same time so close to every shoreline. We do not want to awake this sleeping rhino
We have locked in some melt & global sea level rise for next 1000 years already but only a stupid species would be having wars, nuclear proliferation, fossil fuel expansion

Most sensible creatures have gone to sea but June is Emperor Penguin incubation time. They breed on ever more dodgy sea ice. It’s dad’s turn with eggs on feet and about 2 weeks of above zero temps mean liquid water & therefore a huge risk to eggs 😬🐧. 2/
We wont know until spring if there has been catastrophic breeding failure at some of the local Emperor colonies so it’s🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 time. 😬🐧😬🐧😬🐧3/
Local plants will also suffer Mosses are resurrection plants - they slowly freeze-dry down in autumn & then begin to function within hours when wet again.
But if they are woken up in the middle of winter with wet warm conditions & a melted snow pack & then quickly frozen again they’re cactus 4/
This is the third winter heatwave in Antarctica since 2022 (22, 24, 26)
This currently is anomalous. If a pattern emerges it’s frightening. This should be taken as a BIG warning ‼️ 6/
Freezing wet moss quickly produces ice crystals inside cells - so ice cactus spines from the inside - dead cells - depending on extent of damage - dead moss. Again next summer will tell the amount of damage 5/
