i’m reading the new @quinnslobodian.com on Musk and the book makes a very persuasive case that Musk’s upbringing in apartheid south africa are at the core of his ideology

I also don't think it's a total coincidence that the apex promoter of the Mars colonization grew up in apartheid South Africa: Mars colonization fantasies always include the idea of escape from the terrestrial political reality of having to share space with one's lessers.
The fantasy of human colonization of Mars isn't just stupid, unrealistic, or a waste of resources — it's pernicious, because it actively stokes insouciance with respect to safeguarding the only planet that at least 99.99999999% of us are ever going to live on.

“Detractors might scoff at Musk’s ambition to die on Mars, but at least the dying part would be easy.”

Establishing a human colony on Mars is fraught with risk. Why are so many people obsessed with achieving it?
